Hampton School District 29

E-Learning Plan

In the event of dangerous weather conditions or other emergencies that would impede a traditional attendance day, Hampton School District 29 may implement an E-Learning Day in place of their regularly scheduled in-person learning.

Staff Expectations

Discussions were held with staff at regular staff meetings and during professional development activities as to the expectations of staff during an E-Learning day which could take place at various times during a school year. Discussions included the types of learning activities, instructional strategies, software utilization and communication all provided guidance as to the effective means of instructing students in a remote setting. Upon being notified of a transition to an E-Learning Day, staff will provide five hours of instruction electronically from their own remote location.  All instructional staff are expected to participate to the fullest extent possible. Office staff can choose to work from home or on site as necessary. Students in all grades will be issued or will have access to Chromebooks or other computers which will allow them to receive instruction in their home setting. Most classrooms will utilize Google Classroom as a means of instructional delivery. Packets can be made available for those who desire hard copies or cannot use the technology necessary to receive instruction. Families without internet access at home will be provided all materials in hard copies to ensure they have access to all instructional materials. They will also have the opportunity to connect with their classroom teacher by phone to ensure understanding of work expectations. Additionally, The district will work with families who do not have internet accessibility at home to work with internet providers to identify opportunities for internet connectivity. All staff will be provided with all necessary hardware to deliver their lessons confidently without interruption. Grant funding will be used where needed to train and equip both students and staff to provide and receive lessons throughout the school day. Evaluation of the plan and the consideration of possible changes based on the challenges encountered will be ongoing throughout each school year. Opportunities for collective bargaining with specific employee groups will be provided as applicable depending on need and circumstances.

Student Expectations

During E-Learning, all students including those with special needs will interact with their particular teachers electronically on a pre-arranged schedule through Google Classroom, Google Meets, Zoom, or See Saw. Classes will begin at the direction of the teacher with students participating as they would during in-person instruction. Participation of the students will be provided within the student’s control for the time, pace and means of learning so it is in alignment of the tasks assigned. Any assigned homework is to be completed and returned for review within the time frame stated. Training for students and parents on the use of Chromebooks and navigation to specific sites for instruction will take place early in each school year. During E-Learning Days, student engagement will be monitored through their participation in their daily classroom questions and subsequent electronic video lessons and class assignments throughout the school day.  Students will also be able to take advantage of office hours offered by each teacher during different times throughout the school day for individualized instruction if they have individual questions or need additional assistance in completing their assigned work.

Communication

Those families attending Hampton 29 will be given a copy of the approved plan at registration at the beginning of the school year. Parent input will be solicited for possible revisions to the plan at that time. Throughout the school year, in the event that an E-Learning day is required, feedback will be solicited from staff and families after the event regarding improvements that could be made to increase student engagement and student work completion. Attendance data as well as student grade data will be reviewed to guide conversations on E-Learning improvement efforts. All staff will be given a copy of the plan at the district’s initial planning meeting that takes place on the first contract day each year. The protocol regarding general expectations and responsibilities of the program will be communicated to teachers, staff, parents and students at least 30 days prior to utilizing an E-Learning day via the Hampton 29 school website and TeacherEase. Expectations in the event that an E-Learning Day is utilized will be reviewed and input solicited for possible revisions to the plan at that time. On an E-Learning Day, families will be notified no later than 6:30 of the transition to an E-Learning Day and the reason for the change. The  school autodialer system will be utilized along with notifications on local TV stations to allow all families to receive the message in a timely fashion.

SOPPA & Student Privacy

Hampton Families,

New legislation requires that all school districts do their best to protect the privacy of the students that they serve. To that end, we have published a list of the different pieces of software that grade levels use to help educate our students. The software varies in terms of what information is collected relative to each student. Depending on the software used, the information collected could be a student's name, age, grade in school, teacher's name, address of parents, phone numbers, individual grades, sex, specific class using the information etc. Hampton 29 will make every effort to keep all personally identifiable information private and safeguarded at all times.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

The primary goal of COPPA is to place parents in control over what information is collected from their young children online. COPPA was designed to protect children under age 13 while accounting for the dynamic nature of the Internet. The Rule applies to operators of commercial websites and online services (including mobile apps) directed to children under 13 that collect, use, or disclose personal information from children, and operators of general audience websites or online services with actual knowledge that they are collecting, using, or disclosing personal information from children under 13. The Rule also applies to websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information directly from users of another website or online service directed to children.
